The site is being subjected to DDoS attacks periodically because of a disgruntled ex member. Measures are in place but because of this, there is a lot of latency at the moment.

Probably a dns issue as I had to reconfigure the dns to re route the traffic. It should speed up soon as the dns changes propagate.

Don't think it's singtel. I'm using a US VPN.. i have the same problems, but it seems to be getting better. Heard from the boss that there have been a number of DDoS attempts on the forum by an ex member recently.

The attacks may be over temporarily but the reason why there are all these teething problems is because I've placed the whole server behind a ddos protection company. The way it works is that they have massive filters that screen the traffic and filter out ddos attacks.

However, like all filters, it needs fine tuning in order to get it right so the last couple of days have been spent doing just that.

At the same time DNS changes take some time to propagate throughout the internet and this too causes problems while the propagation takes place.

Some banners on the first page are missing . Am seeing a lot of boxes with x . But sure is much improvement than yesterday when I can't login directly. Thanks boss. :)

A bit slow compared to the usual operation because I've disabled 3 servers and consolidated the forum on one in order to make it easier to filter the ddos attack.

Come Tuesday I'll have a brand new server in place which is twice as powerful as the one I'm using now.

There is also some latency caused by the fact that the ddos defense requires the traffic to be routed through a 3rd party filter. However, I'm implementing a powerful and better hardware solution soon and the latency should gone.

The 504 message appeared because the server was rebooted. That took about 10 minutes.

As for the loading times being a bit slower, I have explained that in an earlier post in this thread. Please read from the beginning for the whole story. ;)

If you see a 504, it means that the server is being worked on. Don't worry. Just try again a few minutes later and things should be normal again.

There is also some latency caused by the fact that the ddos defense requires the traffic to be routed through a 3rd party filter. However, I'm implementing a powerful and better hardware solution soon and the latency should gone.

beerBelly, with your m1 mobile connection, could you check your IP using a tool like ipdrake.com or ipchicken.com? You can send the IP to me in private. If you let us know that IP we can try to figure out the network to whitelist. We have other users connecting from that network, so you must be in some subnetwork not covered by our whitelist.

We are aware of the issue and the problem is dependent on the M1 network, unfortunately, which does not play well with the complex proxy system the website uses now.

If the forum had a problem, it wouldn't make any difference where you were connecting from.

i think maybe ... jus called starhub and complained tat i cant surf a certain forum and can only see the main page and i cant enter the links,then i asked whether is it kena blocked?

the lady said if its blocked, then i should not be able to see anything at all then she asked me for the web address ... i gave her the web address and she said she facing the same problem also over there when testing ... so maybe its the server problem :eek:

Bro, I had intermitent problems with logging in using my starhub cable access (still having this issue).
But it seemed ok with Singtel when I logged in using 3g via iphone. Hence, still rely on singtel to log in.

My gut feel is that all these connection problems stem from the fact that all consumer accounts are routed through giant proxy servers.

This complicates matters immensely. The proxies cache pages, dns info and god knows what else. IP changes take up to 3 days to filter through to end users in Singapore whereas in most countries where there is a direct connection to the internet, changes propagate within hours.

My advice would be to petition the govt to remove those internet filters. They're absolutely pointless in this day and age. Porn is so widely available it can NEVER be filtered out.

However, I too have connection problems sometimes with certain sites. Whenever I experience problems, I just turn on my VPN connection and it always works after that.

The internet has become far more complicated than it was ever intended to be. It's good to have back up modes of networking when things aren't working normally.
