Tremendously disappointing to see a famous name fail to do anything other than making personal attacks on other managers.

Well, Valdano won 1 league championship with Real as coach, so I suppose Rafa has comfortably beaten him then.

Valdano can go on about his art of football, I can accept Rafa's science of football if we win trophies at the end of it.

Argh! Typed a long post and it fails to load. Got to retype. I feel the difference between Man U and Liverpool is their approach to the game.

Man U aims to score more than they concede. They can beat Everton 4-2 and feel good about the win. They don't worry as much on conceding as they know they can score. Despite dodgy defenders like Brown, O Shea being around, most of their transfer budget is spent on attack minded players. They also spend big on individual players. Rooney ($27M), Ronaldo ($12M), Carrick ($18M). Who's our most expensive player in comparison?

Liverpool aims to concede less than they score. It's common for us to win 1-0 and close shop. Put all the players into a defensive formation to protect a 1-0 lead. However, when the opposing team scores towards full time, we end up losing matches or drawing matches (thus dropping points). Rafa tends to insist on buying players according to his valuation. This is probably due to our tight budget. We end up losing players like Alves and Simao.

If we had better wingers and strikers, we wun be 21 points behind Man U. There are many games this season where we don't look like scoring. Kuyt's seldom in the box to attack the goal, Crouch's too light and slow, Bellamy's too short to reach the crosses before the taller central defenders. Gonzales doesn't seem to know how to cross (look at Fulham match), Pennant took a few months to settle in. We are just hard to break down. We aren't much of a threat moving forward.

Let's hope Rafa spends big on good players. I will love to see Joaquim!

This is debatable. If what you said is true, Rafa would not have won titles with Valencia ahead of Real and Barca. He managed them the same way as he did us.

You can point to the big money Alex Ferguson spent, fair enough, but what made the Mancs stick this season is as much old timers like Giggs and Scholes and effective, less expensively priced players like Vidic, Park, van der Sar who came on a free.

Spend on the right players of course. But you don't want to end up like Real, Leeds or Newcastle.

Get the players the team needs, not because they come with a big price tag or a big reputation.

Do agreed with you on players that we miss, but Simao is not the case of not willing to spend the $$, rather is Benifica president last min chicken out, as the fans were not happy when they got news of the sales. Certainly hope to see simao or Alves, both are excellent wingers.

Also hope they can get a consistent striker, someone who can be in the box to toe poke in the goals. Someone like Ian Rush and John Aldridge.

This is the very same reason why they fell flat-faced 0-3 at the San Siro ... the very same fact Fergie will NEVER win another Champion's League in his remaining life-time.
In Europe, every top level team has a strong defence, so patience is the key where one-shot-one-kill is the gameplan ... unlike in EPL, this blitzkrieg method may appear to work well against the smaller "put-the-team-bus-in-front-of-the-goal" teams, what we are lacking is really strikers who make the most of their chances. The philosophy is "you dun concede, there's no way you will lose" ...
When we were winning most of the 18 English League titles, the Reds were already winning many of their games merely by 1-0 ... so if it's the style of play you have a problem with, I suggest you switch over to supporting Manure or Newcastle - high-scoring games guaranteed most of the time.

PS: Ref the Everton game ... they only managed to outscore the Blues becoz suspiciously, there was a 2nd Neville that was still on their payroll. Also, Moyes decided to play a greenhorn who was still waiting to hatch his nightmare when his own team was 2-0 up!!! With that amount of luck, which team cannot outscore??

Agreed..Pool seems to have more European success as compared to MU...

but it's the domestic record..that Pool need to maintain...the most title won in the history...hopefully they can do it soon...

Valencia has a lot of skillful players. Rafa inherited a very good team to begin with. Thought they didn't spend big, they have the quality when they attack to break down teams. Rafa added discipline in defending. Plus Real doesn't buy galaticos to add value to their team, they buy galaticos to do marketing. I think they didn't buy anyone to replace Makelele. Ended up with a team leaking goals.

Absolutely agree with you. What we have now are strikers who seem to mess up even the simplest of chances.

Defensively, we have a lot of quality. Reina/Carson (GK), Finnan/arbeloa(RB), Hyypia, Carragher, Agger, Paulata (CB), Riise/Aurelio(LB) plus Sissoko/Mascherano(Defensive Midfielder). Seems good enough. Maybe can improve left backs.

Offensively, we aren't as effective. A Championship winning teams has got to score a lot of goals. Think Arsenal (Henry), Man U and Chelsea. We need to spend most of our budget this year here.

Simao was on the plane already. Think Benfica wanted 2 million dollars more to justify his leaving to their fans. I just hope Kewell can make it to the finals. We will need his crosses. Did you guys see the chance he created for Fowler when he came on against Fulham? That's something we had been missing this season.
