How green produce from China enters Vietnam
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 11/28/2016 17:10 GMT + 7 A huge volume of Chinese agro-produce is being transported across the border on a daily basis to Vietnam, where they will be disguised as locally grown or Thai products before being sold to consumers. Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters have gone undercover, following dealers and truck drivers on routes thousands of kilometers long from an ‘open produce market’ in China to the wholesale markets in Vietnam, in order to see how Chinese green produce is able to penetrate so deeply into the Vietnamese market. Sourcing and disguising Tuoi Tre first visited Po Chai, an open agricultural produce market in Pingxiang City in the Chinese province of Guangxi. Po Chai is considered the largest source of green produce for cross-border sales to Vietnam in southern China. Every day, several hundred metric tons of agricultural produce of all kinds are transported to Vietnam in container trucks. Most signs at the market are displayed in both Chinese and Vietnamese. On the left hand side of the venue is a large plot of land zoned for suppliers of mushrooms, grapefruits, watermelons, peanuts, grapes, tangerines, oranges and apples. The other side is a multi-hectare parking lot for container trucks exclusively carrying dragon fruits. At the back of the market is a place for onion and garlic sellers. Every five or ten minutes, a container truck will leave the market, heading toward the Tan Thanh border gate to enter Vietnam. Truck drivers claim that up to 80 or even 90 percent of garlic consumed every day in Vietnam originates from the Po Chai market. Po Chai is an open market in that none of the goods bear any information regarding manufacturers or expiry dates, with mushrooms the only exception. click here to continue reading http://tuoitrenews.vn/business/38244...enters-vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City allocates over $22mn to construct flyover near Tan Son Nhat
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 11/28/2016 20:03 GMT + 7 Officials in Ho Chi Minh City will spend over US$22 million building a flyover at a crowded intersection to ease traffic around Tan Son Nhat International Airport next year. Local traffic management authorities have said the new flyover will be constructed at the Nguyen Kiem-Nguyen Thai Son traffic circle, a bottleneck 2.5km from Tan Son Nhat, in Go Vap District. Construction will begin in January next year and is expected to finish eight months later. The flyover is designed to be in the shape of the letter N, including a 367.7m bridge connecting Nguyen Kiem Street and Nguyen Thai Son Street, another 367.7m bridge linking Nguyen Kiem Street to Hoang Minh Giam Street, and the third one measuring 362.8m long between Hoang Minh Giam Street and Nguyen Thai Son Street. The project to build the flyover will also include the renovation and expansion of those roads leading to the traffic circle, installing LED lights, planting trees, and others. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport required in its approval that advanced technology be applied in making the flyover’s surface and supporting pills. The project will cost VND504 billion ($22.2 million), with VND351 billion ($15.5 million) for the building works and the remainder for site clearance, compensation, project management, and consulting, among others.

New technology at Ho Chi Minh City hospitals reduces wait time
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 11/28/2016 18:05 GMT + 7 A new application at several hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City has allowed patients to arrange for their health check via a single text message, meaning they no longer have to wait hours before seeing a doctor. The Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital in Binh Thanh District and the Go Vap Hospital in the namesake district have both been providing their patients with the new service, allowing them to register for a doctor’s appointment via an SMS. Many patients have expressed their joy as they are no longer required to wait for their numbers to be called as in other public infirmaries in the southern city. Ho Thi Anh Nguyet, a 62-year-old patient from the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, has spoken of her experience at the Oncology Hospital on November 18. Nguyet sent a text message to 19001000 at 8:00 am before receiving a reply stating that her number was 20 and that her health check was confirmed for 9:00 am. The message cost VND1,000 (US$0.04), Nguyet said, adding that the service was extremely convenient and saved her a lot of time. According to Dr. Diep Bao Tuan, deputy director of the infirmary, the ‘smart’ service was initiated in early October. A survey was later conducted on 1,263 users of the application, with 96 percent responding that they were satisfied and were able to manage their time more effectively because of it, Dr. Tuan said. The service has also been vital in preventing overloading at the facility, the deputy director said, adding that about 1,800 people came to the hospital on a daily basis, 75 percent from other provinces across Vietnam. Many patients arrived very early in the morning but still had to wait long hours before being able to see their doctors. Some people had also been taking advantage of the situation, selling their patient numbers to others at between VND200,000 ($8.87) and VND300,000 ($13.3), Tuan reported. People are currently able to use the service between midnight and 4:00 pm, he said, adding that the window would be expanded to facilitate patients who would like to register for their health check a day in advance. Benefit for both patients and doctors According to Pham Huu Quoc, director of the Go Vap Hospital, they had offered a similar service for about a year. Thanks to the new application, patients no longer have to waste their time waiting or risk getting infected by other sick people. In addition, doctors can estimate the number of patients they see in a day, enabling them to relax at work, Quoc continued. The management of patient records has also improved with the new service, he added. The municipal Department of Health has urged other hospitals in the southern city to apply the use of similar technologies to enhance convenience and service to patients.
