SINGAPORE: An editor of an inflight magazine was fined S$10,000 on Thursday for spitting on a police officer.

British national Forgan Duncan had pleaded guilty to spitting on the face of officer Walid Jamblatt Abdullah on 19 December 2012 at about 1am.

The 34-year-old was found lying on the ground along Spottiswoode Park Road, having had many drinks before making his way back to his residence.

Two police officers, who were notified, checked on him.

Duncan however challenged the officers to arrest him. He was then handcuffed before he turned and spat on officer Walid Jamblatt's face.

One other charge of behaving in a disorderly manner was also taken into consideration.

Duncan's lawyer said in his mitigation plea that his client was "extremely remorseful, unconditionally apologetic and thoroughly ashamed for his conduct".

The prosecution pressed for a custodial sentence, but District Judge Ronald Gwee said a high fine would suffice.

The editor of Tiger Airways' inflight magazine could have been jailed up to four years and fined for spitting on the officer.
