He was illegally employed at their VivoCity worksite when he fell 11m and seriously injured himself.

Instead of sending freelance painter Myo Min Aung, 28, straight to hospital, two brothers from the company that had hired him bundled him into a car and drove around for 30 minutes before deciding to dump the dying man.

They left the Myanmar national on a pavement in Upper Circular Road at around 1.20am on Oct 7, 2013. Paramedics pronounced him dead 13 minutes later.

Mr Myo Min Aung was working for painting works company, Height.Service.Magnanimity (HSM) at the shopping mall when he fell.

On Friday (May 20), HSM site manager Muhammad Hidayat Abdul Rahman, now 41, pleaded guilty to one count each of depositing a dying person in a public place, failing to ensure the safety of his workers at the site and employing Mr Myo Min Aung, who did not possess a valid work pass.

According to court papers, Hidayat had failed to:

Conduct an adequate risk assessment of the repainting works.
Develop safe work procedures specifying how the ropes for an access system were to be anchored for night works.
Ensure that the boom lift operator had been licensed to perform his duties.
For failing to ensure his employees' safety, Hidayat could have been jailed up to two years or fined up to $200,000.
For dumping the man, he was given the maximum six months' jail. He was fined $85,000 for the other two offences.

Last December, his brother, safety supervisor Azhar Abdul Rahman, now 45, was also jailed for six months after pleading guilty to similar offences.

He was watching two police officers detain a female suspect when one of them shouted at him to move away.

He punched the officer in the face and got arrested as well.

Yesterday, Tay Hock Choon, 51, was jailed for three months for voluntarily causing hurt to the public servant.

Court papers said Tay was having drinks at V Restaurant in Lorong 13 Geylang at about 8.40pm on Oct 5 last year.

Criminal Investigation Department officer Muhammad Azzar Samsuddin, 28, and his partner were carrying out anti-vice enforcement duties in the area. They spotted a female suspect seated at the back alley of the restaurant. She fled into the restaurant when she saw them approaching and the officers gave chase.

Inside the restaurant, they identified themselves as police officers and managed to restrain her.

The struggle drew a crowd of onlookers, including Tay, who had gathered to watch, but ended up blocking the front entrance of the restaurant.

Mr Azzar, who was trying to lead the suspect out of the restaurant, once again identified himself as a police officer before ordering the onlookers to move away.

Tay punched Mr Azzar in the face and was arrested. Mr Azzar later sought treatment at Changi General Hospital for facial injuries. He was given a day's medical leave.

Yesterday, Tay pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt to a police officer in the execution of his duty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kelly Ho said Tay had attacked a vulnerable part of the officer and that it was not his first violent crime.

Tay had been jailed 42 months and given six strokes of the cane for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous means, among other offences, in 2008.

Tay, who was not represented by a lawyer, asked for leniency. He could have been jailed up to seven years, caned and fined.

It was around noon on Saturday that the teen got the disturbing news.

Toh Wei Xue, 17, was at his lion dance practice when he received a call from his sister Angela, 13.

"She said our mother got into a road accident," he told The New Paper at his mother's wake last night.

Madam Lau Lee Kiau, 46, was on her way to work on Saturday morning when the motorcycle she was on was involved in an accident with a car and a taxi.

Thinking his mother was only slightly injured, Wei Xue said he was not too worried - until he got home.

There, he and Angela found out that their mother had died but no one told them which hospital she was in.

That started the frantic search for the hospital their mother was at.

"We didn't know where she was or which hospital she was taken to. I called every hospital, giving them my mother's name but was told she wasn't there," he said.

"As a last resort, I called the Traffic Police and was told she was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital," he said. Madam Lau's identity was initially listed as "unknown" which was why her children could not locate her.

"By the time we got there, she was already gone," said Wei Xue.

"She didn't leave any last words. We never got to say goodbye."

He looked away, as tears welled up.

It was at the hospital that the Toh siblings overheard that the driver involved in the accident that killed their mother was underage.

The driver was 17.

"He is the same age as me and he killed my mother," said Wei Xue.

TNP understands that the driver fled the scene of the accident but was later arrested by the police.

Remembering their mother, Wei Xue and Angela said Madam Lau, a divorcée, held three jobs "to put food on the table and a roof over our heads".

"She brought us up single-handedly since she and our father divorced," said Wei Xue.

"She worked very hard to bring us up. Life was not easy for her," Angela added.

"Despite that, she remained cheerful and caring. She was always very helpful," said Wei Xue.

Madam Lau's friends and relatives milled around at her wake, providing support for the Toh siblings.

Her wake, lasting five days, is at Bedok North, where the family lives. Her funeral will be held on Thursday.

And while her personal effects were returned to the family, her mobile phone remains missing.

"We want to make a plea to whoever found our mother's phone to please return it. It contains a lot of memories and we want it back," said Angela, her eyes brimming with tears.

Unlicensed teen driver arrested

Madam Lau died later in hospital.

Police said they received a call at 7.56am informing them of the accident.

Two people, aged 51 and 55, were conscious while a woman, 45, was unconscious. All three were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

"The 17-year-old car driver was subsequently arrested for causing death by a rash act," said the spokesman.

The penalty for causing death by a rash act is up to five years' jail, or a fine, or both.

He is the same age as me and he killed my mother.
