Young Vietnamese girls likely to fall victim to dating abuse: UN-backed survey

Tuoi Tre News
Updated : 11/08/2016 15:42 GMT + 7

A recent survey assisted by the United Nations (UN) has revealed that many young girls in Vietnam have fallen victim to dating violence.

The topic of violence between young couples in the Southeast Asian country was discussed at a conference in Hanoi on Monday, aimed at eliminating gender inequality and violence against women.

During the event, a group of researchers reported the result of their survey on dating abuse in Vietnam, which was conducted between 2014 and 2015 and sponsored by the UN.

Of nearly 570 female interviewees between the ages of 18 and 30, 59 percent said they had suffered mental abuse, 23 percent claimed they were harassed on the Internet, while 24 had fallen victim to harassment and violence from their former partners after a break-up.

About 21 percent of the participants said they were either mentally or physically hurt, while over six percent mentioned an intention to commit suicide.

The survey was undertaken to share some insight into the reality of violence against women in Vietnam, in a bid to seek gender equality and add the topic of dating abuse to the adjusted Penal Code.

Violence between couples has been a hot topic on social media, the researchers stated, adding that there had been no official study conducted on the issue in Vietnam before.

Other researches on dating abuse have also been carried out by the same group of people with the assistance of the UN Women in Vietnam.

During a dialog following the meeting, students from universities in Hanoi performed short plays depicting several scenarios of dating between couples.

The plays included situations that could lead to potential violence and how parents could support and help their children to deal with the problem.

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 11/09/2016 08:30 GMT + 7

Check out what is in the news today, November 9:

Politics

-- During a meeting with Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Hanoi on Tuesday, Irish President Michael D. Higgins stressed his government considers Vietnam an important partner in the region, and expressed wishes to beef up multifaceted cooperation with the Southeast Asian nation, particularly in trade, investment, education, renewable energy, and climate change response.

Society

-- An official from the Ministry of Construction reported at a Vietnam-Netherlands cooperation forum held on Tuesday that most landfills across the Asian country have failed hygienic standards. Among them, 132 landfills are in dire need of radical solutions to the untold pollution they have caused to the neighborhoods.

-- Around 100 residents formed a barrier with rocks and vehicles on a section of Vo Van Kiet Street in Dong Anh District, Hanoi, to demand the construction of an overpass in the neighborhood. The incident caused a one-hour traffic jam on the sole road connecting the downtown areas with Noi Bai International Airport.

-- Authorities at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City are detaining a 51-year-old Chinese national after catching him rummaging through another passenger’s luggage on a Vietnam Airlines flight bound for Hanoi on Tuesday morning. The airport authorities had also deported another Chinese man for stealing from another passenger on a flight from Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh City last week.

-- A cold front has been covering and bringing lashing rains to northern localities, including Hanoi, since Tuesday evening and will continue to do so in the next few days, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

-- Police in Cho Gao District in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang confirmed on Tuesday that a woman, her 24-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son had died in hospital some days after they had been found drinking from a bottle of weed killer.

-- Police in Xuan Loc District in the southern province of Dong Nai confirmed on Tuesday that they had arrested another 20 drug addicts for investigation into an incident occurring at a rehab center on Sunday in which over 160 drug addicts stirred up chaos and broke out of the venue.

Business

-- The Airports Corporation of Vietnam and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam have proposed a hike in the prices of several aviation services to the Ministry of Transport, with the new rates to be applied in 2017.

-- The Ministry of Industry and Trade on Tuesday reached a conclusion that the Vietnam Standards and Consumers Association had made some errors and had not guaranteed independence, trustworthiness and transparency when conducting a food safety survey that found an excessive amount of organic arsenic in dozens of Vietnamese fish sauces. The name of an organization sponsoring the association to carry out the study remains a mystery.

-- The relentless competition on the local retail market in recent times has left supermarkets and shopping malls racing to launch promotion programs in a bid to attract new shoppers and boost their patrons’ fidelity.

-- Several banks have announced large profits in a performance report of the first nine months this year.

Residents block street leading to Hanoi airport, demand flyover construction

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 11/09/2016 11:43 GMT + 7

Many citizens in Hanoi have used a variety of objects to block the road leading to Noi Bai International Airport to appeal for the construction of a flyover, causing traffic congestion this week.

Hundreds of residents began placing bricks, tires, bicycles, and motorbikes across a section of Vo Van Kiet Street in Dong Anh District, Hanoi, to prevent vehicles from traveling between Noi Bai International Airport and the downtown area during Tuesday morning’s rush hour.

The incident caused severe traffic gridlocks as long lines of cars, buses, and trucks had to halt their commute and wait for the road to be cleared.

According to some local residents, they barricaded the street to demand that a flyover be constructed.

The section of the road has been considered a ‘traffic black spot’ where accidents often happen, affecting the lives of city dwellers.

Traffic police were later dispatched to the scene, along with representatives of local authorities, to clear the street and invite the protestors to attend a meeting at the local administration headquarters.

Traffic was back to normal at noon the same day.

According to Nguyen Tien Duong, vice-chairman of the People’s Committee in Dong Anh District, the citizens were asked not to repeat the incident as their petition would be submitted to higher authorities.

A project to construct a flyover on Vo Van Kiet Street was initiated six years ago, Vice-Chairman Duong was quoted by VnExpress as saying.
Duong added that it has not been carried out ever since.

Many requests have been made to expedite the process, the official continued.

Cold front brings low temperature to northern Vietnam; flood expected in central provinces

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 11/09/2016 09:28 GMT + 7

A cold front has been forecast to lower temperatures and cause rainfall in northern Vietnam while posing high risks of flood in the central region since Tuesday.

Provinces along the northern border have experienced light rain since Tuesday morning, with the highest rainfall recorded at up to 40 millimeters in Ha Giang Province, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported.

As of the late afternoon of the same day, the cold front extended, covering the rest of the northern region before hitting the north-central provinces from Quang Binh to Thua Thien-Hue as night fell.

Under the influence of the climatic conditions, localities in the north saw a drop in temperature, which was between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius in the plain and from 9 to 13 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas.

Rain fell on Hanoi and nearby provinces, with common temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Mountainous localities in the north are expected to be dampened by heavy downpours and high risks of landslides due to the combined effect of the cold front and convergence zone at high latitude.

Central provinces are forecast to be covered with medium to torrential rain at between 100 and 300 millimeters.

Sea areas in the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, will be affected by winds of about 61kph and squalls of up to 88kph, causing waves between two and four meters high.

The water level in rivers from Quang Binh to Nghe An Provinces is anticipated to rise, posing a high possibility of flash floods in lower areas.

Air fares set to soar with proposed hike to Vietnam's aviation fees

By VnExpress November 9, 2016 | 02:00 am GMT+7

The national aviation administration wants to lift landing and takeoff fees by 15 percent.

Fares for domestic flights in Vietnam are likely to increase next year following a proposal by the civil aviation agency to raise costs for various airport services by up to 42 percent.

The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) has asked the Ministry of Transport to hike landing and takeoff fees for domestic flights at all airports by 15 percent from next year.

Aviation security and service fees for domestic passengers, which are included in ticket fares, would also go up 42 percent to VND100,000 ($4.50) per passenger at large international airports, such as Cam Ranh, Can Tho, Cat Bi, Da Nang, Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat and Vinh.

Fees at smaller airports in central Vietnam, including Buon Ma Thuot, Chu Lai, Dong Hoi, Lien Khuong, Phu Bai, Phu Cat, Pleiku and Tho Xuan, as well as Phu Quoc International Airport on the southern resort island, would rise by 33 percent to VND80,000 ($3.60) per person, the CAAV said.

Lai Xuan Thanh, director of the unit, said it made the proposal based on the recommendation of the state-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam, which said that the landing and takeoff fees for domestic flights at 22 airports nationwide have remained unchanged for the past five years and are just 32-72 percent of the average rate in Southeast Asia.

“We think the recommendation is suitable because heated aviation growth has put a lot of pressure on infrastructure,” Thanh said, as cited by the Vietnam News Agency.

Landing and takeoff fees for domestic flights in Vietnam currently range between VND1.35 and 3 million ($60-135).

“The fees are too low. They fail to account for how much the government has to subsidize the airports,” Thanh said.

Carriers said the fee hikes are bound to push ticket prices up, but that may not happen immediately as they do not want to lose customers.

Carriers said they will ask the CAAV to recalculate the hikes to reduce their impact on ticket prices.

Thanh said Vietnamese carriers offer tickets that cost less than the caps set by the government, so there is still room for them to increase.

Vietnam’s aviation market has been booming in recent years. The number of Vietnamese air passengers jumped by 29 percent on-year to nearly 19 million in the first six months, according to the CAAV.

However, more than 20,000 flights, or 15.8 percent of the total, were delayed, often due to overloaded facilities.

Cashew prices are about to go nuts

By Ha Phuong November 8, 2016 | 03:18 pm GMT+7

Prices of raw nuts hit a 10-year high in October as demand surged.

Demand for cashew nuts has skyrocketed over 50 percent since 2010, industry data showed. Meanwhile, the worst drought in a century in Vietnam, the largest exporter, has raised concerns over supply shortages.

As of October 30, prices of raw nuts in Vietnam jumped to VND52,000 ($2.33) per kilogram, the highest in the past decade, compared to VND38,000 early this year, according to the country's cashew association.

Average export prices also surged 20 percent between January and August, reaching $8,000 per ton.

Excessive heat and low rainfall linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon in the main grower countries, including Vietnam, have affected both the quality and quantity of the crops, which could lead to shortages next year.

Vietnam has lost a fifth of its harvest so far, causing domestic prices to rally. “Cashew nut consumers may face hefty price rises through next year due to adverse weather,” according to the Vietnam Cashew Association.
