Most people claims that it derives it's name from the need to rid the house of empty boxes (X'mas gifts's boxes) the day after Christmas. Not true!!
In fact, the holiday's roots can be traced to Britain, where Boxing Day is also known as St. Stephen's Day. Reduced to the simplest essence, its origins are found in a long-ago practice of giving cash or durable goods to those of the lower classes. Gifts among equals are exchanged on or before Christmas Day but beneficences to those less fortunate is bestowed on the day after.
There are a few claims on how the name was derived but the following are a few "correct" ones... according to the historians:
1. Centuries ago, the merchants in Britain gave boxes of food and fruit to tradespeople or servants the day after X'mas. These gifts wer done up in boxes and hence the name.
2. Christmas celebrations long ago entailed bringing everyone together from all over a large estate, thus creating one of the rare instances when everyone can be found in one place at one time. After all the partying, the lord of the manor (big Towkay) will have the opportunity to hand out that year's stipend of necessities like spun cloth, leather goods, durable food supplies, tools and what not. Guess how they carry these goods back??
3. Another claim would be the boxes used by the churches on Christmas Day for seasonal donations to the needy, and the contents distributed by the clergy the day after.
Happy Boxing Day & a Great New Year for TP-ians.
Cheers.
