American man denied entry into Bali, immigration cites sex offenses in US
Indonesian immigration authorities in Bali say they refused entry to an American man because of his history of sexual offenses in his own country. Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration Class I, Ari Budijanto told reporters that United States national JDD, 71, arrived in Bali from China on Xianmen Air flight MF891 on Sunday. But because of the American’s alleged history as a sex offender, he was sent back on Monday at 1 am, reports say. “We refused (JDD’s entry), because according to our data, he has been involved in sexual crimes. And we do not want to take the risk, for something that would disturb our society,” Tribun Bali quoted Budijanto as saying. It’s not surprising Indonesian authorities wouldn’t want to run the risk of allowing in someone tagged as a sex offender, given the high profile case of an elderly Australian man who was recently found guilty of sexually abusing a number of young girls in Bali. Indonesia has amped up its penalties for sex crimes, passing a law authorizing chemical castration for child sex offenders. The Australian, however, was ineligible for that penalty and was ultimately sentenced to 15 years by Denpasar court this October. |

Kiwi meth suspect ‘stressed and freaked out’ before Bali trial
A kiwi woman apparently isn’t doing so hot as her drug trial in Denpasar court nears. New Zealander Myra Lynne William, 27, was arrested after her flight from Melbourne landed at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport in September. Immigration noticed her behaving “unnaturally” in the queue and when she was taken aside to be further checked, a pouch of 0.43 grams of crystal meth allegedly fell to the ground. Police tested her urine, which allegedly came back positive for methamphetamine, marijuana, and ecstasy. Now William is apparently showing similar, unbalanced behavior, based on comments from her lawyer, Suriantama Nasution. "She's so stressed and freaked out," AAP quoted Nasution as saying on Thursday. The kiwi’s trial is “soon” approaching, prosecutor Paulus Agung reportedly said on Thursday. The kiwi will likely be facing charges covering possession, importation, and use of drugs. Under Indonesian law, drug use could land the kiwi four years max in jail, while the possession charge could get her 12 years, and importation could mean a maximum of 15 years behind bars. William, who actually resides in Australia, had come to Bali for a holiday with a group of friends before her incident at immigration landed her in trouble. This is her first time to the island, according to her lawyer. |

Rp 470 BILLION class action lawsuit filed against Ahok on behalf of all Muslims
Rp 470 BILLION class action lawsuit filed against Ahok on behalf of all Muslims in Indonesia
Earlier this week, FPI leader Habib Novel filed a civil lawsuit against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for Rp 204 million to cover cost of his own private investigation into Ahok’s blasphemy case. Yesterday, yet another lawsuit against the governor was filed - a Rp 407 billion class action lawsuit that its initiators assert is being filed on behalf of all Muslims in Indonesia. The lawsuit was filed by Ali Lubis, the vice chairman of the lawyers group Advokat Cinta Tanah Air (ACTA). Another member of ACTA, Gerindra Party politician and lawyer Habiburokhman, filed the other lawsuit against Ahok on behalf of Novel. "The group being represented in this lawsuit is all Indonesian citizens who are Muslims, and the group’s representative is Ali Hakim Lubis, an Indonesian Muslim citizen," ACTA lawyer Ali Nurhayati said yesterday as quoted by Detik. Nurhayati said the lawsuit is based on Article 98 of the Criminal Code which allow victims of crime to demand compensation for their cases. He did not specify what material damages Ahok’s alleged blasphemy caused to all Muslims in Indonesia, but Nurhayati did say his team was ready to corroborate the claim with evidence, witnesses and experts. The ACTA lawyer said the lawsuit’s key demand was compensation amounting to Rp 470 billion. It also asks that Ahok be forced to purchase advertisements in nine national newspapers to issue an apology to all Muslims (despite the fact that there are already literally thousands of new stories about his numerous past apologies already). "[We are asking that] that the defendant be punished by paying damages to the plaintiff for material losses amounting to Rp 470 billion that would be distributed to all members of the group in the form of Muslim worship facilities that would be coordinated by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in every major city throughout Indonesia," Nurhayati said. To say that this civil lawsuit is on behalf of all Muslims in Indonesia seems like quite a stretch, considering that less than half of all Indonesians believe Ahok actually committed blasphemy. We’re also wondering how exactly Ahok’s words could have possibly caused Rp 470 billion worth of material damages to Muslims, unless ACTA is planning to argue that Ahok should be held responsible for the costs of organizing the massive protests against him. Which wouldn’t be a very surprising argument for them to make, considering that they also think Ahok should repay Habib Novel for the money the FPI leader spent privately investigating Ahok’s alleged crime. |

Governor Ahok stands trial for alleged blasphemy against Islam
Jakarta's Christian governor will stand trial on Tuesday accused of blasphemy in a high-profile case that has emboldened hardline groups and stoked fears of growing intolerance in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama -- the first Christian to govern Jakarta in more than 50 years -- will defend allegations that he insulted the Koran and fight calls for his imprisonment under Indonesia's tough blasphemy laws. Purnama, known for his outspoken style, outraged Muslims when he controversially quoted a passage from the Islamic holy text while campaigning in elections for the Jakarta governorship. His remarks ignited a protest movement by hardliners, who have long railed against a non-Muslim in city hall but failed to dent the governor's popularity. But their rallying cry to defend Islam and punish "the blasphemer" attracted unprecedented support from Muslims both moderate and conservative, who marched against the governor in numbers not seen in many years. The case is being viewed in part as a test of religious tolerance in Indonesia, where a spike in attacks on minorities has eroded a reputation for diversity and inclusiveness. "If he's found guilty, this could be the biggest setback for pluralism in Indonesia's history," said Tobias Basuki from the Jakarta-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. Race a factor Purnama fell foul of Indonesia’s archaic blasphemy laws when he insinuated that his opponents had used a Koranic verse to trick people into voting against him. An edited version of his speech went viral online, sparking outrage far beyond Jakarta, where Purnama has ruled since his predecessor Joko Widodo became president in late 2014. The governor apologised but Indonesia's highest clerical body, and a slew of radical groups, declared the remarks blasphemous and urged authorities to bring charges. Critics want the country's blasphemy laws overhauled. The legislation was rarely used during the 32-year rule of strongman Suharto, but in recent years it has been exploited to persecute minorities, rights groups say. Purnama is not only Christian but ethnic Chinese, a community long mistrusted in Indonesia, and his race made pinning him for blasphemy easier, political expert Syamsudin Haris told AFP. "Ahok's 'Chinese-ness' is a factor," he added, using the governor's popular nickname. Religious freedom is protected by law in Indonesia but moralising thugs often enforce their own rules, preventing Islamic minorities like Shias and Ahmadis from worshipping and opposing the construction of churches. The most prominent of these groups, the Islamic Defenders Front, has used the blasphemy scandal to burnish its credentials, staging high-profile events alongside political leaders including President Joko Widodo. "A group that used to hound the public and the government has now been legitimised, and even accommodated, by the government,” said Hendardi, the chairman of the rights group Setara Institute, who goes by one name. 'Trial by mob' Widodo -- like presidents before him -- has been accused of ignoring the rising influence of intolerant hardline groups, which have flourished in the nearly two decades of democracy since Suharto’s downfall. The president "did not have the courage" to stand up to these firebrand Muslims, Haris said, fearing a backlash from the electorate, around 90 percent of which follows Islam. The populist backlash against Purnama -- an ally of Widodo -- backed the president even further into a corner. His efforts at playing peacemaker ahead of a huge rally in November failed, with mobs burning police cars and clashing with riot officers outside the presidential palace. Widodo was forced to cancel a long-planned visit to Australia to confront the crisis, sparking rumours of a coup. Later, arrests were made over an alleged plot to topple the government. "The case shows that the government has an enormous task to address political Islam," Basuki said. Critics say the controversy is as much about politics as the governor's foes whip up anger to reduce his support ahead of the hotly-contested February poll. Purnama was on track to win in February but has been watching his lead crumble as his two opponents -- both politically-connected Muslims -- have gained ground. Purnama has refused to bow out of the race, but risks haemorrhaging more support if the blasphemy scandal drags on, Djayadi Hanan from pollster SMRC told AFP. The trial - which Widodo and the police have vowed to resolved quickly -- will have long-lasting ramifications, analysts say, especially if Purnama is sentenced to five years prison as allowed by law. "The government can't let this become a trial by mob, because it will set a terrible precedent for our democracy," said Hendardi. |
