PAP announces candidate for Punggol East SMC

Thursday, 10 Jan 2013

Dr Koh Poh Koon was revealed as PAP's candidate for Punggol East SMC this morning.

Prior to this, Dr Koh was seen accompanying Mr Teo Ser Luck, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and Minister of State for Trade and Industry to his first Meet-the-People (MPS) session at Punggol East SMC.

The official PAP press release on the announcement of Dr Koh Poh Koon as their candidate for Punggol East SMC is as follows:

Dr Koh Poh Koon, 40, spent his early childhood in a farmhouse at Lorong Cheng Lim in Punggol. When he was 3 years old, his family moved to a 4-room HDB flat in Toa Payoh. His father, the sole breadwinner, often worked double shifts to support the family of seven. As the eldest child, Poh Koon often worked odd jobs in his younger days to supplement the family income.

Poh Koon was educated in MacRitchie Primary School, Maris Stella High School and Hwa Chong Junior College. After completing his ‘A’ levels, he secured a place to pursue a medical degree at the National University of Singapore. He graduated in 1996 and subsequently obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as well as the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2005. He also received advanced training in Edinburgh, UK (2002) and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA (2006).

Poh Koon is a General Surgeon with sub-specialised interest in colorectal surgery. He spent 14 years at the Department of Colorectal Surgery in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) before setting up his practice at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. He continues his public service as the Acting Director of the Colorectal Cancer Molecular Genetics Research Laboratory as well as the founding Director of the Colorectal Cancer Genomic Health Service in SGH. Poh Koon is also a part-time Consultant at Changi General Hospital (CGH) where he mentors surgical trainees undergoing Advanced Specialist Training. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and a Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in NUS.

Poh Koon remains a HDB heartlander and is actively involved in grassroots work, serving the community as a Resident's Committee Executive Member(RC) since 2002. He also contributes as an NSman and is presently the Commanding Officer (CO) of a Combat Service Support Battalion. A Guards Officer with Airborne qualifications, he was the Top graduate of the 10th National Service Command and Staff Course (NS-CSC) in 2009 at the Singapore Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

He has keen interest in the arts. He was active in school plays and drama as actor and director. He has also won the National Chinese poetry recital award in secondary school and also put up a play in public during his university days.

He is married with 2 young children. He is an avid runner and enjoys photography.
